And in another universe, maybe, Sherlock would have said, yes, I’m gay. Yes, I’m gay, and the way you look at me and lick your lips is wildly flattering, and I cannot comprehend it, and I’ll need some months. Years, maybe. Will you stay and wait until I am ready?
In another universe maybe Sherlock would have laid his violin aside and stepped forward and softly, softly touched John’s fingers trembling around the glass of alcohol and he’d have said, it’s you, as soft as his touch, as terrified as John, as honest as anything.
Maybe in another universe Sherlock would have told John, I did it because I’m in love with you, and I can’t stop thinking of you, and I like myself when I’m with you, and this whole thing terrifies me and I don’t know what to do about it but oh my God I want this. I want it. I want you. I’ve never wanted anyone.
In another universe maybe, Sherlock would have been selfish. Would have been brave, brave in another way.
Maybe in another universe Sherlock can love John, he can love him and have him.
I briefly thought, Oh if we could but find our way to that universe. Then I remembered that is why we have fanfiction. 😀😀👍❤❤❤❤❤
I’m so committed to making as many of these possibilities realities on some plane, in some story, in some choice of words, whether urgent or hesitant or just plain and unfiltered and honest. I’m committed to allowing them to talk at last, directly and honestly and completely, for the first time. They’ve never been given this even once in the canon. I’m committed to the story that they should have, in as many variations as I have time to write. All of these universes are real. We just have to write them.
